Do Electric Cars Use Oil?

Jaguar I-PACE Side Profile

Is your electric car needing an oil change? Do electric cars even need oil? If you drive an EV, you can officially say goodbye to oil changes, as electric cars do not use oil. They do, however, require brake fluid, coolant, and transmission fluid changes. Take a moment to learn more about maintenances requires for EVs like the Jaguar I-PACE. Then, if you think you’re due for maintenance near Delray Beach, explore the service specials at Jaguar Palm Beach, and reach out to our service department for help in West Palm Beach!

What Fluids Do You Need to Change in Electric Vehicles?

Now that our Delray Beach neighbors know that electric cars do not use oil and that they never need to take their electric cars in for an oil change again, let’s take a look at a few fluids that still need to be changed. These include:

  • Transmission Fluid: Your Jaguar I-PACE still features a transmission, and in order to ensure this vital and expensive system stays intact, you’ll need to make sure its geas are properly lubricated. Consult your owner’s manual or contact our garage to determine how close you are to your next transmission fluid change.
  • Radiator Coolant: Make sure your coolant in your radiator is topped off, so that a number of systems, including your battery, don’t overheat.
  • Brake Fluid: Jaguar I-PACE EVs require fewer brake inspections than models with combustion engines, but you still need to keep tabs on your brake fluid, both to keep your brakes properly lubricated and to ensure their hydraulic brake pressure system works properly.

Unique Electric Vehicle Parts

We’ve covered what fluid changes a Jaguar I-PACE requires. Now, let’s take a look at the unique components of an EV. For starters, your EV implements an electric motor that uses magnets to create a magnetic field around your motor and turn. As the motor churns, it converts the electric current from your battery into torque. Other unique components of your electric Jaguar I-PACE include:

  • Charging ports
  • Battery
  • Thermal system
  • Traction motors
  • Onboard charge
  • DC-DC converter
