What Causes a Car Battery to Deteriorate?

When determining how often to replace a car battery, Delray Beach drivers should be aware of the different factors that can reduce the lifespan of their Jaguar car battery. Some major culprits include:

  • Vibrations: Your battery is held down by clamps. If they’re loose, your battery will rattle around continuously as you drive, which will quickly break it down.
  • Needing a Jump: If you have a bad habit of leaving your lights on, and your battery has seen more than a few jumps in its time, you can expect it to have a diminished lifespan.
  • Heat: If you live in a region with hotter weather like here in Florida, your battery will have to work harder, as its internal liquids will suffer more evaporation. Therefore, you can expect your battery to have a shorter lifespan.

How to Know If Your Jaguar Car Battery Needs to Be Replaced

Here are the most common signs that you need to replace your Jaguar car battery:

  • Dimming headlights
  • Engine struggles to rev up, or you’re performing more jumpstarts
  • Fluctuating power

How to Test a Car Battery

The best way to stay on top of how often to replace your car battery is to perform the following battery tests:

The Headlight Test:

  1. Ignite your engine while keeping the car in park and keeping your headlights on.
  2. Rev the engine and watch your lamp beam to see if it changes in brightness.
  3. Does the beam brighten? If so, the current from your battery isn’t strong enough to keep the lights at a steady brightness while the car is idling.

Using a Digital Multimeter:

  1. Get a voltmeter and set it to 20 volts.
  2. Touch the negative battery terminal (black) with the negative voltmeter probe.
  3. Then, touch the positive battery terminal (red) to the positive meter probe.
  4. Then, turn the headlight on and check your voltmeter’s reading.
  5. If the reading is 12.5 volts at 80℉, your battery is fully charged. At 12.3 volts, you’re at 75%. If it reads 11.8 volts or lower, you have less than 25% of charge left.

How Much is a Replacement Car Battery?

The average car battery will cost between $75 to $120, but certain premium batteries can cost upwards of $200. As for hybrid batteries, these will cost you between $1,000 and $6,000 to replace. While that may sound like a lot, consider the fact that hybrid batteries last longer, are often warranty-backed, and this job is essentially like replacing your engine block.
